| As environmental and agronomic conditions are heterogeneous between and within locations, diversity within varieties or crop populations should increase adaptability to the changing and variable range of growing environments. | At present, around 95% of organic production is based on crop varieties that were bred for the conventional high-input sector, lacking important traits required under organic and low-input production conditions. Populations with a high level of genetic diversity are promising for OA (organic agriculture) conditions due to their adaptation, resilience and performance stability in different environments. Binnen Diversifood (2015-2019) is gewerkt met heterogene uitgangsmaterialen, zoals populaties en landrassen, met als doel om diversiteit binnen gewassen te stimuleren en om lokale, biologische voedselsystemen te ontwikkelen. Het selectieproces was daarbij openbaar, zodat boeren en tuinders vrije toegang hadden tot de zaden. | Seed is the basis of food crops, and thus for products in shops, and comes with a long history. Plant breeding is developing rapidly, a fact that raises questions among growers, shopkeepers and consumers. In 2015, for the first time European patents were granted to companies for plant varieties and native plant traits, such as for a tomato variety with more healthy substances and a bell pepper variety that is resistant to pest insects. These patents have caused strong social indignation: the free exchange of seeds and plant material with these advantageous qualities is blocked by these patents. | In a period of 7 years 2007-2013) 25 varieties of lupins were tested on different soil types in The Netherlands, including 20 varieties of L. angustifolius, three varieties of L. albus and two varieties of L. luteus. | Een belangrijke stap om kennis over zaadvermeerdering en veredeling onder telers in stand te houden is bewustzijn van raskenmerken te bevorderen, dat wil zeggen het bewustzijn dat niet alle rassen voor alle teeltsystemen geschikt zijn. Zo geldt dit met name voor biologische abonnemententelers in Brabant die op zandgrond werken. Groenteveredeling richt zich op grootschalige intensieve teelt op vruchtbare (klei) bodems. Deze rassen zijn steeds minder geschikt voor biologische abonnemententelers. De opzet van dit project was om specifiek met deze Noord‐Brabantse telers van drie gewassen een rassenvergelijking op te zetten (veldsla, boerenkool en rode biet), per gewas vijf rassen, en de kwaliteit gezamenlijk te vergelijken. |
